Tardigrade or Water Bear
Water bear or tardigrade. Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a water bear (Echiniscus sp.) walking over spagnum moss. Water bears live in damp habitats such as moss or lichen and are tiny segmented invertebrates. They can survive dry conditions by changing into a dessicated state in which they can remain for many years. Whilst in this form (known as a tun) they can withstand the most extreme environments and can tolerate radiation levels as high as x1000 more than other animals, including humans. They have even been brought back alive after spending 10 days in the vacuum of space! They are classed as extremeophiles. Magnification x1120 (x275 at 10cm wide)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the incredible resilience and adaptability of a Tardigrade, also known as a Water Bear. The scanning electron micrograph captures the minute details of this tiny segmented invertebrate as it gracefully walks over spagnum moss. Water bears thrive in damp habitats like moss or lichen, but what sets them apart is their ability to survive in extreme conditions. When faced with dry environments, they undergo a remarkable transformation into a dessicated state called a tun. In this form, they can endure for many years without water. These extraordinary creatures can withstand radiation levels up to 1000 times higher than other animals, including humans. Their astonishing survival skills don't end there; tardigrades have even defied the odds by surviving 10 days in the vacuum of space! This makes them true extremeophiles - organisms capable of thriving in the harshest environments imaginable. The magnified image reveals intricate details that would otherwise go unnoticed by the naked eye. It's fascinating to observe how these "moss piglets" navigate their surroundings and adapt to ensure their survival. This photograph serves as a testament to nature's ingenuity and reminds us that life exists even where we least expect it. The resilience and tenacity displayed by these microscopic creatures are awe-inspiring and offer valuable insights into how life can persist against all odds.
