Skylab Station Viewed by Skylab 2 Command Module

A view of the Skylab 1 space station Orbital Workshop showing the micrometeoroid shield missing. A parasol solar shield was later deployed to shade this exposed area. This picture was taken from the Skylab 2 Command/Service Module during its " fly around" inspection. The Apollo Telescope Mount is in the background. The damaged and partially deployed OWS solar array system wing is at lower right. After an aluminum strapping was cut during the June 7th extravehicular activity, the solar panel fully deployed. The OWS solar panel on the opposite side was completely ripped off during the Skylab 1 launch on May 14th leaving only cables and tubing

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a unique perspective of the Skylab 1 space station Orbital Workshop (OWS) as seen from the Skylab 2 Command Module during its "fly around" inspection. The image reveals a significant detail - the absence of the micrometeoroid shield, which was later rectified by deploying a parasol solar shield to protect this vulnerable area. In the background, we catch a glimpse of the remarkable Apollo Telescope Mount (ATM), an instrumental component of Skylab's scientific endeavors. However, our attention is quickly drawn to the damaged and partially deployed OWS solar array system wing located at lower right. This particular panel had experienced complications during an extravehicular activity on June 7th when an aluminum strapping was inadvertently cut, causing it to fully deploy. Adding to the station's battle scars, we can observe that on May 14th during Skylab 1's launch, one side of the OWS solar panel was completely torn off, leaving behind only cables and tubing. These visible signs of wear and tear serve as reminders of both challenges faced and triumphs achieved in space exploration. This photograph serves as a testament to human ingenuity and resilience in overcoming obstacles encountered while pushing boundaries beyond Earth's atmosphere. It encapsulates not only technological achievements but also highlights the delicate balance between man-made structures and nature's forces in outer space.
