The First Space Shuttle External Tank
The first Space Shuttle External Tank (ET), the Main Propulsion Test Article (MPTA), rolls off the assembly line on September 9, 1977 at Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans, Louisiana. The MPTA was then transported to the National Space Technology Laboratories (currently called Stennis Space Center) in southern Mississippi where it was used in the static test firing of the Shuttles cluster of three main engines. Marshall Space Flight Center was responsible for developing the External Tank. External Tank contains two tanks, one for liquid hydrogen and one for liquid oxygen, and a plumbing system that supplies propellant to the Main Engines of the Space Shuttle Orbiter. 77

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a significant milestone in space exploration - the production of the very first Space Shuttle External Tank (ET). On September 9,1977, at Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans, Louisiana, the Main Propulsion Test Article (MPTA) rolled off the assembly line with great anticipation and excitement. The MPTA was then carefully transported to the National Space Technology Laboratories, now known as Stennis Space Center, located in southern Mississippi. This crucial facility served as a testing ground for various components of space missions. Here, the MPTA played a vital role in conducting static test firings of the Shuttle's cluster of three main engines. Developed by Marshall Space Flight Center, this remarkable External Tank consisted of two tanks - one designed to hold liquid hydrogen and another for liquid oxygen. Additionally, it featured an intricate plumbing system responsible for supplying propellant to the powerful Main Engines of the iconic Space Shuttle Orbiter. This image not only captures an extraordinary engineering achievement but also symbolizes humanity's relentless pursuit of exploring outer space. It serves as a reminder that behind every successful mission lies years of dedication from countless scientists and engineers who work tirelessly to push boundaries and expand our understanding of our universe.
