A Sky View of Earth From Suomi NPP

This composite image of southern Africa and the surrounding oceans was captured by six orbits of the NASA/NOa Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership spacecraft on April 9, 2015, by the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instrument. Tropical Cyclone Joalane can be seen over the Indian Ocean. Winds, tides and density differences constantly stir the oceans while phytoplankton continually grow and die. Orbiting radiometers such as VIIRS allows scientists to track this variability over time and contribute to better understanding of ocean processes that are beneficial to human survival on Earth. The image was created by the Ocean Biology Processing Group at NASAs Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland

EDITORS COMMENTS
This breathtaking print captures a mesmerizing sky view of our beautiful planet Earth from the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership spacecraft. Taken on April 9,2015, by the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instrument, this composite image showcases southern Africa and its surrounding oceans in all their glory. As we gaze upon this awe-inspiring picture, our eyes are drawn to Tropical Cyclone Joalane swirling over the vast Indian Ocean. The power and intensity of nature's fury is vividly displayed before us. However, beyond this tempestuous display lies a deeper story. The constantly shifting winds, tides, and density differences depicted here remind us of the perpetual motion that occurs within our oceans. These dynamic forces shape our planet's delicate ecosystem and influence weather patterns across continents. Moreover, hidden beneath these turbulent waters lie phytoplankton – microscopic organisms that play a vital role in sustaining life on Earth. Their continuous growth and demise contribute to the intricate balance of marine ecosystems. Thanks to orbiting radiometers like VIIRS, scientists can closely monitor these oceanic processes over time. By tracking variability in wind patterns and phytoplankton distribution, they gain valuable insights into how these factors impact human survival on our blue planet. Crafted with precision by the Ocean Biology Processing Group at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland; this extraordinary image serves as a reminder of both the fragility and resilience of Earth's interconnected systems -
