Flying Saucer Aliens

No, its not a flying saucer, it is the domed top to a 70 foot long vacuum tank at the Lewis Research Centers Electric Propulsion Laboratory, Cleveland, Ohio. The three technicians shown here in protective clothing had just emerged from within the tank where they had been cleaning in the toxic mercury atmosphere, left after ion engine testing in the tank. Lewis has since been renamed the John H. Glenn Research Center

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we are transported to the Electric Propulsion Laboratory at the Lewis Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio. At first glance, it may appear as though we have stumbled upon a scene from a sci-fi movie - "Flying Saucer Aliens". However, what lies before us is far more intriguing and grounded in reality. The focal point of this image is the domed top of a colossal 70-foot long vacuum tank. This impressive structure served as an integral component for testing ion engines. The three technicians featured here are clad in protective clothing, having just emerged from within the tank's confines. Their mission? To clean up after exposure to a toxic mercury atmosphere left behind by rigorous ion engine testing. Their dedication and commitment to scientific exploration shine through their determined expressions. It is worth noting that since this photograph was taken, Lewis Research Center has been renamed the John H. Glenn Research Center - honoring one of America's pioneering astronauts. This remarkable snapshot offers us a glimpse into the world of electric propulsion research and development conducted at Lewis Research Center. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity and our relentless pursuit of knowledge beyond Earth's boundaries.
