EVAtion. Mission Specialist Bruce McCandless II, is seen further away

Mission Specialist Bruce McCandless II, is seen further away from the confines and safety of his ship than any previous astronaut has ever been. This space first was made possible by the Manned Manuevering Unit or MMU, a nitrogen jet propelled backpack. After a series of test maneuvers inside and above Challengers payload bay, McCandless went " free-flying" to a distance of 320 feet away from the Orbiter. This stunning orbital panorama view shows McCandless out there amongst the black and blue of Earth and space

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a historic moment in space exploration. Mission Specialist Bruce McCandless II defies the boundaries of his spacecraft, venturing further than any astronaut before him. With the aid of the groundbreaking Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU), a nitrogen jet propelled backpack, McCandless embarks on an extraordinary journey into the vastness of space. The image showcases McCandless as he floats freely, 320 feet away from the safety of the Orbiter. Surrounded by the contrasting hues of Earth and space - black and blue merging seamlessly - he becomes one with this awe-inspiring celestial panorama. McCandless' daring extravehicular activity (EVA) aboard Challenger during STS 41B is a testament to human ingenuity and courage. The MMU enables him to navigate effortlessly through this weightless environment, pushing the boundaries of what was previously thought possible. As we gaze upon this photograph, we are reminded that humanity's thirst for exploration knows no bounds. It serves as a reminder that our collective curiosity propels us forward into uncharted territories, constantly expanding our understanding of both ourselves and our place in the universe. Let this image inspire us to reach for new heights and embrace challenges with unwavering determination. May it serve as a symbol of human resilience and remind us that even amidst darkness, there is always beauty waiting to be discovered beyond our comfort zones.
