Detail of Triton

This color photo of Neptunes large satellite Triton was obtained on Aug. 24 1989 at a range of 530, 000 kilometers (330, 000 miles). The resolution is about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), sufficient to begin to show topographic detail. The image was made from pictures taken through the green, violet and ultraviolet filters. In this technique, regions that are highly reflective in the ultraviolet appear blue in color. In reality, there is no part of Triton that would appear blue to the eye. The bright southern hemisphere of Triton, which fills most of this frame, is generally pink in tone as is the even brighter equatorial band. The darker regions north of the equator also tend to be pink or reddish in color. JPL manages the Voyager project for NASAs Office of Space Science, Washington, DC

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures a mesmerizing close-up of Triton, Neptune's largest satellite. Taken on August 24,1989, from a distance of 530,000 kilometers (330,000 miles), the image reveals intricate topographic details with a resolution of approximately 10 kilometers (6.2 miles). To enhance the visual experience, pictures were captured through green, violet, and ultraviolet filters. The unique technique employed in this photograph allows us to witness Triton's ultraviolet-reflective regions appearing as striking shades of blue. However, it is important to note that there are no naturally occurring blue areas on Triton visible to the naked eye. Instead, the bright southern hemisphere dominates this frame with its captivating pink tones while an even brighter equatorial band adds depth and allure. Contrasting against these vibrant hues are darker regions located north of the equator which exhibit reddish or pinkish colors. This interplay between different color palettes showcases Triton's diverse geological features and atmospheric phenomena. Managed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) for their Voyager project under the Office of Space Science in Washington D. C. , this extraordinary print offers a glimpse into the beauty and complexity of our solar system's outer reaches. It serves as a testament to humanity's insatiable curiosity about distant celestial bodies like Neptune and its enigmatic moon Triton.
