Neptune Full Disk View

This picture of Neptune was produced from the last whole planet images taken through the green and orange filters on the Voyager 2 narrow angle camera. The images were taken at a range of 4.4 million miles from the planet, 4 days and 20 hours before closest approach. The picture shows the Great Dark Spot and its companion bright smudge; on the west limb the fast moving bright feature called Scooter and the little dark spot are visible. These clouds were seen to persist for as long as Voyagers cameras could resolve them. North of these, a bright cloud band similar to the south polar streak may be seen. Years later, when the Hubble telescope was focused on the planet, these atmospheric features had changed, indicating that Neptunes atmosphere is dynamic. The Voyager Mission is conducted by JPL for NASAs Office of Space Science and Applications, Washington, DC

EDITORS COMMENTS
This breathtaking print captures the mesmerizing beauty of Neptune in its full disk view. Taken by Voyager 2's narrow angle camera, the image showcases the planet through green and orange filters from a distance of 4.4 million miles, just days before closest approach. The focal point of this celestial masterpiece is the Great Dark Spot, accompanied by a bright smudge nearby. As we explore further, our eyes are drawn to the fast-moving bright feature known as Scooter on the west limb, alongside a small dark spot. These remarkable cloud formations were observed persisting for as long as Voyager's cameras could resolve them. Moving towards the north region, an intriguing band of bright clouds similar to the south polar streak comes into view. It is fascinating to note that when Hubble telescope later focused on Neptune, these atmospheric features had transformed significantly over time. This discovery shed light on Neptunes' dynamic atmosphere and its ever-changing nature. The Voyager Mission conducted by JPL for NASA's Office of Space Science and Applications in Washington D. C. , has provided us with invaluable insights into distant worlds like Neptune. Through their pioneering efforts and groundbreaking images like this one, we continue to marvel at the wonders of our universe and expand our understanding of planetary dynamics beyond Earth's boundaries.
