Endeavour is Delivered to the Kennedy Space Center

NASAs 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft No. 911, with the space shuttle orbiter Endeavour securely mounted atop its fuselage, taxies to the runway to begin the ferry flight from Rockwells Plant 42 at Palmdale, California, where the orbiter was built, to the Kennedy Space Center, Florida. At Kennedy, the space vehicle was processed and launched on orbital mission STS-49, which landed at NASAs Ames-Dryden Flight Research Facility (later redesignated Dryden Flight Research Center), Edwards, California, May 16 1992. NASA 911, the second modified 747 that went into service in November 1990, has special support struts atop the fuselage and internal strengthening to accommodate the added weight of the orbiters

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a historic moment in space exploration as the magnificent space shuttle orbiter Endeavour is delivered to the Kennedy Space Center. The image showcases NASA's 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft No. 911, proudly carrying the Endeavour atop its fuselage, as it taxies towards the runway at Rockwell's Plant 42 in Palmdale, California. Built at this very location, Endeavour embarked on a monumental journey from its birthplace to Florida's Kennedy Space Center. This ferry flight marked the beginning of an extraordinary chapter for both the spacecraft and NASA itself. Once arrived at Kennedy, meticulous processing awaited Endeavour before it could embark on orbital mission STS-49. STS-49 would eventually make history by landing at NASAs Ames-Dryden Flight Research Facility (later renamed Dryden Flight Research Center) in Edwards, California on May 16th, 1992. The successful completion of this mission showcased not only the capabilities of Endeavour but also highlighted NASA's unwavering commitment to pushing boundaries and expanding our understanding of outer space. The second modified Boeing 747 known as "NASA 911" played a crucial role in safely transporting these awe-inspiring orbiters across vast distances. With special support struts atop its fuselage and internal strengthening specifically designed to accommodate their weight, this aircraft became an indispensable asset for NASA's ambitious endeavors. This remarkable photograph serves as a testament to human ingenuity and determination while reminding us of our boundless curiosity about what lies beyond
